It will generally be the norm for the ‘more talked about’ restaurants to be in the locations most frequented by visitors & residents alike & this is certainly the case in Malta. (see our main restaurants page here) Naturally, there will still be instances when fine dining can be achieved outside of the most common locations. Malta & Gozo have many towns & small villages which would not be classified as ‘tourist areas’ but which have some excellent places to eat & drink nevertheless. This page will gradually be adding listings for those types of restaurants in Malta & Gozo which visitors might not otherwise hear about but may wish to seek out & try. It will certainly be a better way to taste genuine Maltese cuisine as most of the eating places will serve a traditional style menu. Many options are open to you in relation to car hire in Malta. Welcome to Gozo, the 2nd largest of the Maltese Islands. Whether you’re staying on Gozo or Malta, a visit to the different sights this Island offers is recommended. From Malta, you will need to get to the northernmost point of Cirkewwa (pronounced Chair- kewwa) which lies about 2 km north of the Malta holiday resort of Mellieha and is well served by the buses from most areas. The ‘Gozo Channel Ferry’ runs a very frequent service, especially during the summer months. You can travel as a foot passenger or take your hire car and the crossing takes only 20-25 minutes. Once you reach the impressive harbour of Mgarr (pronounced imm-jar) on Gozo, your excursion truly begins in earnest.

No summer holiday in Malta would be complete without a visit to a golden sandy beach & the Maltese Islands offer excellent opportunities for swimming & sunbathing around their coastlines. Undoubtedly, Ghadira Bay (Mellieha) and Golden Sands are the best 2 sandy beaches in Malta however smaller ones can also be found at Ghajn Tuffieha, (next to Golden Sands) Armier Bay, St George’s Bay, (Paceville) Paradise Bay, Pretty Bay (Birzebbugia) and Bugibba. In Gozo, Ramla Bay, (near Marsalforn) has a large sandy beach and other smaller ones can be found dotted around the island. Comino also has a few small sandy beaches, especially near the hotel and of course, for swimming, you won’t beat the crystal clear water of Blue Lagoon (see the pics at bottom of this page). With very warm sea temperatures in the summer and autumn, you will find most of the locals taking a dip in the sea even from the rockier areas of coastline across Malta & Gozo. Swimming in the sea is generally safe in most areas, however signs are in place if any warnings are necessary. Sunbed & umbrella hire is readily available and kiosks along the entire sandy beach offer drinks & snacks. An excellent beach with a beautiful view. At the opposite end of the Island, towards the southernmost point, you will find Pretty Bay, a small sandy beach in Birzebbugia, Malta. Once again, the sea is beautifully clear & ideal for swimming, as long as you don’t mind the view which looks out towards the Malta Freeport & its’ cranes & ships.

BUGIBBA BEACH
BUGIBBA BEACH The beach found in the Bugibba / Qawra area of St Paul’s Bay in Malta was constructed just a few years ago so is a ‘man-made’ one. Previously, there was no beach in this area. This beach offers a ‘sandy/pebbly’ surface and access to the sea is over rocks. During summer, ramps are placed on the beach to make it easier to get into the water. Further into Bugibba, near the main square, you will also find sunbathers relaxing on the rocks and jetty as there is no sand at this point.
